After spending half an hour in order to find out how much it costs to take the JLPT test via the official Japanese Language Proficiency Test website, I have decided to write this useful blog post to save you some time. Let’s take a look at how much the JLPT is in the United States, Japan, the Philippines, India, the UK, and Europe.
The costs for taking the JLPT test vary per country and JLPT level. In America and Japan, the JLPT tests are fairly reasonable and cost $60 and ¥6,500 respectively, while in Europe the fee is higher ranging from 70€ to 100€. In the UK, you can take the test for 90€ in Ireland and £100 in England.
Read on if you want to find out how much it costs to take the JLPT N5, N4, N3, N2, and N1 in different countries. After a quick overview, we will take a detailed look at the registration fees in the United States, Japan, the Philippines, and India. At the end of my post, you will find a handy chart including several other countries.
How Much Does it Cost to Take The JLPT Test?
As you can see from the list below the costs for taking the JLPT test differ greatly depending on the country. While in America and Japan the registration fee is the same for all levels, in other countries such as the Philippines and India the higher JLPT levels are slightly more expensive.

How Much is the JLPT Test in the United States?
In the United States, the costs for taking the JLPT test are about $60 which is equivalent to the 6,500円 it costs to take the test in Japan. Currently, the test fees are the same for all five JLPT levels (N5, N4, N3, N2, N1) across the country. In Canada, it is a bit cheaper and costs only $70 CAD.

A few years ago the registration fee for the JLPT test was different for the lower three and the higher two levels. In the past JLPT N5, N4, and N3 cost $50, and the registration fee for N2 and N1 was $60. However, according to the newest brochures, this has been changed.
The test fees for the JLPT can change every now and then, so before taking the test please check the official homepage of the American Association of Teachers of Japanese (AATJ). On the page, scroll down to the “Characteristics and Benefits of the JLPT” section and look for the download link to the brochure for the latest JLPT test.
Currently, the second page of the brochure contains detailed information about the registration fee for the tests as well as the 18 test locations across the United States. In the brochure, it also says that the test fee is non-refundable and non-transferable.

How Much Does the JLPT Test Cost in Japan?
In Japan, it usually costs 6,500円 to take the JLPT test which is about $60, £44, or €50. Depending on where you take the test the fees may vary slightly, but in general, the test fees are the same for all five JLPT levels (N5, N4, N3, N2, N1). Before the JLPT was cheaper and cost only 5,500円 ($50).

Compared to other countries in Europe the costs for the JLPT test in Japan are fairly reasonable. The test fee has to be paid in advance either by credit card, bank wire transfer (Pay-easy), or at a convenience store in Japan and is not refundable.

How Much Does the JLPT Cost in the Philippines?
In the Philippines, the costs for the JLTPT test range from ₱1,100 to ₱1,500. The three lower levels JLPT N5, N4, and N3 are cheaper and cost only ₱1,100 which is about $23, £16, or 20€. For JLPT N2 and N1, the test fee is a bit higher, and taking the test costs ₱1,500 which is about $32, £22, 26€.

How Much Does the JLPT Test Cost in India?
In India, the costs for the JLTPT test range from about Rs. 1,400 to Rs. 1,800. The lowest level JLPT N5 is the cheapest and costs only around Rs. 1,400 which is about $19, £14, or 16€. While JLPT N1, the highest level, is also the most expensive and costs Rs. 1,947 which is about $26, £19, or 22€.

The fees for taking the JLPT test in India seem to depend on the host institution and where in India you decide to take the test. On the official webpage of the Japanese Language Teachers Association (JALTRA), the fees are as stated above. Scroll down to “Application Process Steps” and you will find the fees under “Step 2“.
However, according to the Japanese Language Teacher’s Association PUNE (JALTAP), the fees are Rs. 1180 for N5, Rs. 1298 for N4, Rs. 1416 for N3, Rs. 1770 for N2 and N1. On their webpage click on “JLPT Application & payment method” for the current JLPT exam.
